Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter: Wag Wine Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

When the Washington-Wilkes Animal Shelter (WWAS) applied for the grant, we knew puppy and kitten season would be coming upon us quickly and wanted to be ready to test and vaccinate all the puppies and kittens we knew would be coming our way.

Since we received the grant money and purchased our items, our in-house kittens have grown old enough to be given their initial FIV/FeLV testing and their FVRCP vaccinations. The few litters of puppies have been given their DAPP vaccinations.

CATS:
So far, we have had only two kittens adopted from our shelter who have benefitted from the vaccinations: Sarah (fourth photo) and Chloe (fifth photo). Sarah received one vaccination and Chloe was tested and given two.

Our shelter has an agreement with Pet Sense in Grovetown, GA, to help us get our cats and kittens adopted. We will be starting our rotation soon. When we start our rotation, our cats and kittens are usually adopted within about three days from when they arrive. That will make the number of cats and kittens adopted increase tremendously and is the reason we do not have many cats on Petfinder.

We did have one cat brought back to our facility after the adopters told us she was very sick and they could not take care of her anymore. We took her to our veterinarian and found she had an autoimmune disease and needed to have all her teeth pulled. She has recovered very well from her surgery and, so far, has not had any continuing problems. She has been a “permanent foster” at our facility, but if she continues to not have any side effects, we will put her back up for adoption.

DOGS:
We had just received a litter of six almost purebred black Lab puppies when we received our vaccinations. We were able to get all six of them vaccinated thanks to the grant and get all six of them adopted.

We currently have had seven of our dogs and puppies adopted, four transferred to rescues in the north, one reclaimed after being brought to the shelter as a stray, and one in foster care waiting to be neutered when he is able.

How many pets did this grant help?

This vaccination grant allowed us to help 35 cats and 30 dogs to be on their way to being adopted.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

One of the puppies, Biscuit (first photo), now renamed Hope, was adopted sight-unseen by a woman who lives in West Virginia. She had lost her lab, Bella, a few weeks before and she saw this puppy on Petfinder and said she absolutely had to have her because she looked just like her Bella.

So the shelter worked with her and got Biscuit spayed, microchipped, and given the rest of the remaining vaccinations she needed. Her owner drove all the way down from West Virginia to pick her up (second photo). The third photo shows her in her new home.
