Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
After we announced this adoption event (since we do not participate in same-day adoptions), grant funding was used to cover the costs involved with Always and Furever's dedicated adoption staff member's time needed to review, interview, schedule meet-and-greets and match pets with prospective adopters through our Petfinder application link and our internal screening process, which includes home visits and veterinary reference checks. Always and Furever takes great care to match pets with potential adopters through a rigorous screening process; this funding helped support and offset costs involved in providing free adoptions and placement for our animals.

On a cold winter day, Always and Furever was contacted by the animal control officer of a small rural community in a bordering state with no shelter support. A dog and her nine pups had been dumped on the property of an elderly man who was trying to keep them safe and fed but was visually impaired and had few resources.
On this day, storms made it a struggle to find transport and open vet clinics. A neighbor provided an igloo for the night using straw for insulation and the ACO provided food and supplies.
The next morning, all were transported to the nearest city emergency vet where they were assessed, issued a health certificate, and then released to continue their journey to Always and Furever.
This family became known as Mama Melba and the fruit puppies (Avocado, Bartlett, Cherry, Gala, Guava, Kiwi, Kumquat, Macintosh, Mango). The KIA Pet Adoption Grant allowed Mama Melba and her puppies to qualify for free pet adoptions. Thank you, KIA Pet Adoption Grant, for changing the lives of these pets — they have all found their forever families and will now only know the comfort of a home and a future filled with love.
