Golden Retriever Rescue and Adoption of Needy Dogs: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

I am writing to express our gratitude for the support we received through the Petfinder Foundation Emergency Medical Grant. Thanks to the grant, we were able to offset some of the medical expenses for Joe.

As we continue our mission to rescue abandoned, abused, neglected, and unwell dogs, your support is invaluable. We do not turn down dogs with extensive medical needs; therefore, our medical costs are our biggest overall yearly expense. We deeply appreciate your commitment to helping us make a difference in the lives of the dogs and their future families.

How many pets did this grant help?

This grant will help one dog, Joe.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Thanks to the grant, we were able to offset some of the medical expenses for Joe, a 4-year-old golden retriever who was shot and ultimately had to have his leg amputated. Despite losing his leg, he has a heart as big as his smile. Joe also had to endure heartworm treatment.

His resilience is remarkable. He is nearing the end of his heartworm treatment and soon, thanks to a partnership with the University of Louisville Medical, he will be fitted with a state-of-the-art 3D-printed prosthetic. This will allow him to move naturally and enjoy his life to the fullest.

This is the sad backstory on Joe. Joe is a handsome 95-lbs. golden who has been given a second chance at a good life! Joe, who was left on the side of the road in a rural part of Kentucky, was taken to a shelter that could not care for him and they contacted GRRAND.

GRRAND brought him in from the shelter and got him to the emergency vet right away. This poor guy had some skin abrasions, a fractured left front leg that unfortunately recently had to be amputated, and was heartworm-positive.

Despite the challenges, Joe is already adapting remarkably well to getting around on three legs. He’s a big-hearted, loving guy who can manage a few steps on three legs. While shallow steps are easier for him, he’s learning to tackle regular steps too, especially with a little assistance.

We believe Joe is eminently adoptable and will make a wonderful addition to any loving home.

Joe needs a quiet home, without another young active dog or young kids, since he needs to remain calm as he completes heartworm treatment.

Meet Joe here.
