Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Thanks to the generous $2,000 funding from the Petfinder Foundation and Kia for sponsored adoptions, we were able to place 28 animals into loving homes. Sponsored adoptions encourage potential adopters to consider rescuing a shelter animal. Shelters across the country have experienced an increase in animals coming into their facilities. Animal adoptions have slowed since the Covid pandemic as people are returning to work, going on vacations, or moving.

How many pets did this grant help?

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

One dog in particular was a very special adoption. Pomeranian Ziggy Stardust came to FAMD as lost dog on May 17, 2022. No microchip, no identification, and not neutered. He was about 8 years old and very sweet. Everyone at the shelter could not believe that no one claimed him. Shelter staff and volunteers posted his photo and information on social media and sites that help find lost pets. Nothing.

After three weeks, a family asked if they could foster him to see if he would be a good fit with their kids and lifestyle. Of course we said yes and Ziggy headed off to a slumber party with an awesome family with twin boys who were turning 8. They took Ziggy camping and had a great time, so much so that they decided that, since Ziggy was 8 and the boys were 8, he would become their brother so they could be triplets.

After Ziggy was neutered and had dental work, the family adopted him. Some health issues were found during his surgery, such as an enlarged heart, but they still wanted him to become a member of their family. It was such a great adoption. Because the adoption fee was sponsored by the Petfinder Foundation and Kia, it helped to get Ziggy into a great home.

Thank you.
