Tenth Life Cat Rescue: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Emergency Medical grant funds that we received from the Petfinder Foundation directly offset some of the cost of Godzilla's full-mouth extraction surgery and post-operative care. Godzilla is a 2-year-old male cat who was diagnosed with severe stomatitis, a painful and progressive oral condition that left him unable to eat.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Godzilla was rescued by a kind individual in a rural, under-resourced area. When he arrived at Tenth Life, all we knew was that he was suffering from chronic diarrhea — so severe that he often could not make it to the litter box. He was uncomfortable, weak, and clearly unwell.

Despite rounds of antibiotics, dewormers, probiotics, and prescription food, Godzilla was not getting better. So we took him to a specialist for an abdominal ultrasound. Along with gastrointestinal disease, Godzilla was diagnosed with severe stomatitis, a painful inflammation of the mouth, tongue, and cheeks that made it incredibly difficult for him to eat. His food would fall out of his mouth, and he was suffering.

Due to the severity of his condition, Godzilla was referred to a veterinary dental specialist. Just last week, he underwent a full mouth extraction — a major surgery we hope will finally bring him relief.

Godzilla is currently on prescription food and Atopica, and has a follow-up with his dental specialist in late October. He does still experience some redness and inflammation in his mouth and has not been cleared yet by the specialist to be adopted.
