Associated Humane Societies: Dog Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant provided $950 for dog enrichment items, which made a meaningful impact on both our animals and our organization. The funding for enrichment is always set aside as it is vital for the well-being of our dogs, but often difficult to prioritize on a tight budget and among many competing needs. This support allowed us to purchase toys, beds, snuffle mats, interactive feeders, and water-play items without diverting resources from essential shelter and daily care.
The impact on our dogs was immediate. As soon as the items arrived, they were used across our shelter-dog population. The snuffle mats and puzzle toys quickly became favorites as they kept the dogs engaged and mentally stimulated, with some wanting to spend their entire enrichment time playing with the mats and puzzles.
Balls and other fetch toys were loved by our most energetic dogs, and one dog loves them so much that he waits every day for the opportunity to play fetch. The splash pads were a great hit, with most dogs either starting or stopping their walks with splash time.
We can see an active positive effect on every dog in our care as those items help to reduce stress, providing the dogs with new or more engagement, increasing their comfort, and helping to bring joy to them while they wait for their forever homes.
How many pets did this grant help?
From August to December of this year, these are estimated to help at least 575 dogs.
Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
The enrichment items have played an important role in helping dogs shine during interactions with potential adopters. One example is Bear (first photo), a shy dog who has greatly benefited from the new toys in our engagement room. The snuffle mats (second photo) and interactive toys give him an outlet to show off his energy and personality during meet-and-greet sessions.
One of the new toys became a favorite of his and he took it with him when he got to be highlighted on-air this week (third photo). It showed that this normally shy dog had a playful side. This extra exposure, combined with the chance for families to see him engaging happily with the enrichment, has sparked increased interest in his adoption status.
While Bear is still waiting for his forever home, the grant has directly supported his ability to connect with people and show off the fact that he will be a good pet.
