Best Friend Dog Rescue: Dog Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
We work with puppy, adult, and senior dogs at our foster-based rescue. They are all at varying stages of life, and KONG toys are perfect for each stage.
Puppies are teething and learning to play, so KONGs are safe for them. No parts break off for them to swallow, and they help stimulate the pups while they learn through play.
Our adult and senior dogs LOVE KONGs. We fill them with peanut butter and other special treats for mental stimulation. Some of our adult dogs are still learning how to play and use toys, so they love the KONGs because they cannot destroy them, they are easily cleaned, and they provide hours of entertainment.
Sharing toys with our pups helps to strengthen the bond between us and them. They learn to trust us and become more confident.

Everyone, meet Roxy!
Roxy came to us from down South, and she is a sweet senior (we think she’s approximately 7 or 8 years old). Believe it or not, Roxy gave birth to one puppy before she came to us, which is extremely rare considering her age.
We believe Roxy was on the street for quite some time because she is heartworm positive (we are paying for her treatment) and she was about 10-12 lbs. underweight when we got her. She is unsure of things that many street dogs are leery of, such as delivery people, large trucks, and men she doesn’t know. She doesn’t mind cats or dogs as along as there is a slow introduction.
Roxy has been living with two of our best fosters for about two months now. She looks amazing and is really coming out of her shell. We found out that she loves going on walks, going to visit lakes, visiting retirement homes, and also loves a good nap on the couch!
She can get a little nervous being alone, so she is a perfect candidate for the KONG grant because the mental stimulation of playing keeps her occupied when her fosters are out of the house and brings her a sense of peace and relaxation until they return.
