Central New York Cat Coalition, Inc.: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Thanks to the Kia Pet Adoption Grant, we were able to offer half-price adoptions for 70 adult cats! In the spring, we often have dozens of adult cats ready for new homes while everyone starts asking about adopting kittens. We have very few kittens for adoption because they are all very young and waiting to be old enough for spay/neuter and adoption, but we have GREAT adult cats looking for love! This grant allowed us to offer adult cats an even better chance to get adopted thanks to half-off the base adoption fee. Cats who benefitted from this grant ranged from one year old to 14 years of age!

How many pets did this grant help?

70

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Goldie (first photo) had been living outside for more than a year in a neighborhood with feeding stations for feral cats. Everyone thought she was an owned cat who was just indoor-outdoor.

The Cat Coalition got involved in helping to TNR the colony and we asked about the friendly cat who was hanging around. We took her into foster care until an owner could be confirmed, but no one came forward after weeks of posts on neighborhood social media sites and asking around. And Goldie turned out to be microchipped!

While the chip had never been registered by the owner, it did contain a date of birth of July 8, 2010, making Goldie nearly 14 years old!

We were able to contact the pet store she was purchased from more than 13 years earlier to verify her details, but they didn’t have records going back that far to help us find the owner. After calling nearly a dozen local vet offices, no one had her microchip in their system.

Sweet Goldie got up-to-date on her vaccines and tested for FeLV and FIV and went up for adoption on Petfinder. Thanks to a Facebook post sharing her Petfinder listing, one of our own volunteers fell in love with her and ended up adopting her just days after she went up for adoption!

This golden oldie girl will now have a wonderful life with a caring owner for the rest of her days. She joins Peaches, another cat adopted from the Cat Coalition six years ago!
