Tri-Lakes Humane Society: KONG Toys Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
The Kong grant has been an invaluable resource for both our organization and the pets in our care. Many of the dogs that come to our shelter arrive anxious, fearful, and withdrawn, often struggling to adjust to the stress of a new environment. The Kong toys have provided a simple yet powerful solution to help ease their anxiety and offer much-needed mental stimulation. By allowing these dogs to engage with the toys, we’ve been able to reduce their stress levels, give them a positive outlet for their energy, and help them feel more comfortable in their temporary home.
The impact of the Kong toys has been profound. They’ve given our shelter dogs a way to self-soothe, allowing them to occupy themselves during downtime and making it easier for them to adjust to their kennels. This grant has not only improved the emotional well-being of many dogs but has also made their time at the shelter more enriching, preparing them for their future adoptive families. The Kong grant continues to make a meaningful difference, supporting both the mental health of the dogs and the overall efficiency of our shelter’s care programs.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Dennis (first photo) is just one of the many dogs who have greatly benefited from the Kong grant. He has been in the care of Tri-Lakes Humane Society for over 306 days, and throughout that time, we’ve watched him grow and thrive with the help of Kong toys (second photo).
Dennis is a young, energetic male who often struggles to manage his high energy levels in a shelter environment. His love for squeaky toys is undeniable — he lights up the moment one is introduced, and his excitement is contagious.
When we first introduced Kong toys filled with peanut butter, the transformation was remarkable. Not only did these toys help keep Dennis engaged, but they also significantly reduced his stress levels.
Dennis, like many shelter dogs, would often resist returning to his kennel after walks, but since we incorporated the Kong toy into his routine, he now enters his kennel willingly and remains calm and occupied for longer periods. This small change has had a profound impact on his emotional well-being.
Dennis is just one example of how Kong products have enriched the lives of many of our shelter dogs, providing mental stimulation, comfort, and a sense of security. The Kong grant has been an invaluable resource, helping us care for and support the dogs in our shelter, giving them a much-needed outlet for their energy and a positive association with their kennels.
While Dennis has not yet been adopted, the Kong toys have played a significant role in preparing him for his forever home, ensuring he is more relaxed, mentally engaged, and ready for the transition into a loving family.
