The Big House: Emergency Medical Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

This grant was a turning point for our organization. Covering Big Mac’s extensive dental surgery gave him the opportunity to become healthy, pain-free, and finally ready for adoption. Before the grant, he was stuck in a kind of limbo, medically stable from his weight-loss progress, but still unable to find a forever home because of the urgent dental work he needed. The support we received closed that gap, and the outcome has been life-changing for him.

But the impact did not stop with Big Mac. By getting him to adoption, we were able to open space for another cat in crisis, Lasagna, a 30-lb. cat at NYC ACC during an overpopulation emergency. Typically, cats of Lasagna’s size and condition are overlooked or euthanized, but because the grant allowed us to move Big Mac forward, we had the capacity to say “yes” to him. In this way, the grant not only improved the quality of life for one cat but helped shape our organization’s ability to fulfill our mission: taking in the ones no one else can. It showed our supporters and community what’s possible with the right care, commitment, and resources.

How many pets did this grant help?

Directly, this grant helped two cats, Big Mac and Lasagna. Big Mac received the dental surgery he urgently needed, which unlocked his chance at adoption and gave him a pain-free future. Once he was adopted, it created space for us to bring in Lasagna, a 30-lb. cat who needed immediate intervention. Indirectly, however, the grant has helped many more. Big Mac’s story, shared widely on our social media and rescue platforms, has become a beacon of hope for people with severely obese or medically complex cats. His journey educates the public about pet obesity, inspires owners to seek veterinary care and structured nutrition plans, and proves that cats like him are not “lost causes.” His success has also brought new adopters, fosters, and donors into our orbit, strengthening the foundation of our sanctuary so that many more cats will benefit in the months and years to come.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Big Mac’s (first photo) story is one of true transformation. When he arrived, he weighed 31 lbs. and struggled with severe obesity and painful dental disease. He had been neglected for much of his young life and, without intervention, his future was grim. Thanks to this grant, we were able to provide him with extensive dental surgery, the final medical hurdle keeping him from adoption. After recovering, he found a loving forever home where he continues his weight-loss journey. He has already reached 22 lbs., is pain-free, and is experiencing life as a healthy, active cat for the first time.

Big Mac’s adoption created a ripple effect. With space now open at the sanctuary, we welcomed Lasagna (second photo), a 30-lb. male cat who came from NYC ACC during an overpopulation crisis. Like Big Mac, he faced an uncertain future and would likely have been euthanized without intervention. With dedicated care, he began his rehabilitation journey and was recently adopted into his own loving home.

Lasagna’s adoption, in turn, created space for us to say “yes” to Sean (third photo), another cat at immediate risk of euthanasia due to his medical and behavioral challenges. Today, Sean is safe in our care, and Big Mac and Lasagna are thriving in their new homes. This ripple effect shows how one grant, given to help a single cat, ended up saving three lives and demonstrated the far-reaching impact of supporting medically complex and obese cats.

You can meet Sean here.
