Save Our Scruff Rehome & Rescue: Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

Save Our Scruff partnered with Ayudog, a non-profit dog shelter based in Valle de Bravo, Mexico, to transport 10 dogs into Canada and find them loving homes.

While Ayudog would prefer to rehome these dogs locally, the unfortunate reality is that the community is already oversaturated with hundreds of unwanted dogs. By relocating these 10 dogs to Canada, Ayudog is able to devote more time and resources to other local dogs in desperate need.

Save Our Scruff collaborated with Ayudogs to help find these dogs the homes they deserve. In June, the dogs were flown into Canada, where they were met by the Save Our Scruff intake team. After a veterinary exam, including vaccines and preventative care, the dogs were temporarily settled into their respective Save Our Scruff foster homes and prepared for adoption.

The Purina Canada Happy Paws & Hearts Operation Grant paid in full for intake veterinary care for all 10 dogs.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

The dogs rescued by Save Our Scruff were surviving in desperate conditions on the fringes of the community with limited access to food, shelter, and medical care. A number had suffered abuse or neglect.

For example, 2-year-old Micaela, a Labrador mix, arrived at the Ayudog shelter underweight and desperate to eat. She had previously been kept tied up with irregular access to food and was extremely protective of her meals.

After being flown into Canada, Micaela was eventually adopted by a loving family and has been happily adjusting to her new life.
