Morris Animal Refuge: Dog Enrichment Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
This grant has had a meaningful impact on our organization and the pets in our care, especially for large dogs with behavioral challenges. With funding for essential enrichment tools and training supplies, we’ve been able to create a more structured and stimulating environment for these animals, reducing stress and helping to manage challenging behaviors.
As a result, dogs who previously exhibited stress-related behaviors are now calmer and easier to handle, making them more adoptable. This has increased their chances of finding suitable homes, contributing to higher adoption rates. The grant has also enabled us to welcome a wider variety of animals, including those who may have previously faced barriers to adoption, by providing them with the targeted care and enrichment they need to thrive.
Overall, this funding has strengthened our ability to fulfill our mission, positively impacting both the animals and the community we serve.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
One of the most rewarding successes from our enrichment program, made possible by this grant, is the story of Codagh. Codagh, a young stray, came to us visibly distressed and struggling to adjust to the shelter environment. When he first arrived, he paced anxiously in his kennel, repeatedly biting the bars out of frustration and fear. It was clear he wasn’t accustomed to confinement and needed special support to help him settle.
With the enrichment tools funded by this grant — such as lick mats, snuffle mats, and interactive feeding toys — we were able to provide Codagh with constructive activities that calmed his anxiety and redirected his energy. These tools offered him mental stimulation and comfort, helping him adapt to his new surroundings.
As a result, Codagh’s behavior transformed. His stress levels decreased and his “kennel presence” improved significantly; he became calmer and more approachable, even eagerly engaging with staff and visitors. Before long, Codagh’s friendly personality shone through and he quickly captured the heart of a new family who happily adopted him.
Codagh’s story is a testament to how impactful enrichment activities can be for the well-being and adoptability of our shelter animals. Thanks to this grant, we were able to provide him with the support he needed to make a successful transition from a frightened stray to a beloved family companion.
