Atascosa Animal Allies: Kia Pet Adoption Grant Report
How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?
South Texas is inundated with tiny kittens from April through September, as mother cats have three litters a year. Once July arrives, there are so many cats on the market that it creates a bottleneck effect, and adoptions are slow for us due to many other large rescues reducing adoption fees.
Not only that, many people who have unfixed female cats have many kittens that they give away for free to anyone who will take them. What a travesty! Our hearts are saddened by that.
We also do not own a brick-and-mortar facility for people to walk into and see kittens/cats/dogs/puppies face-to-face. We do all we can to advertise on our Petfinder site and social media, but adoptions slow dramatically at this time. That's when the Petfinder Foundation Kia Pet Adoption Grant really helps us. Reducing the adoption costs prompts many people to adopt our beautiful animals. Truly, this grant has been a godsend, and we are very thankful for receiving it.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.
Cowboy Pickles and his sister, Cowgirl Coraline (first photo), were discovered on a street named Cowboy Ridge by an animal lover who was walking with her friend. She saw a box on the side of the street and curiosity got the best of her, so she opened the box and two kittens were inside. We are so thankful she found them!
Ruby, the lady who found the kittens, took them in and cleaned them up, bathed them, and gave them all the food they could eat. Both kittens came out of their shells and got along great with her dogs. But Ruby and her husband had never had cats before and reached out to us to help find them homes.
We posted a story about them on Facebook and listed them on Petfinder.com and a week later Ruby and her husband called us and said they loved the kittens too much to see them go so they adopted them through us. These babies will have the best home imaginable and already take naps with their dogs.
