Fredericksburg SPCA: Dog Enrichment Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

The Petfinder Foundation’s 2024 Dog Enrichment Grant has had a tremendous impact on the Fredericksburg SPCA by enhancing our play yard, improving the well-being of our shelter dogs, and increasing their chances of adoption.

With the grant funding, we were able to install catch pens and new gates and divide the yard into two separate spaces. These improvements have doubled the number of meet-and-greets we can facilitate, allowing more potential adopters to interact with our dogs in a safe, controlled environment.

Additionally, these enhancements have significantly increased playtime and enrichment opportunities for our shelter dogs. With the yard divided, more dogs can enjoy off-leash exercise, socialization, and training sessions, reducing stress and improving their overall behavior. A less stressful, more engaged dog is not only happier but also more adoptable.

By enabling us to make these critical improvements, the grant has helped us provide better care for our dogs, enhance their quality of life while in the shelter, and ultimately help them find loving homes faster. We are incredibly grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for their support in making these meaningful changes possible!

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

Thanks to the Petfinder Foundation grant, our senior dog Boq (first photo) had the opportunity to spend more time in the play yard, and the impact was truly life-changing. Inside the shelter, Boq struggled with the loud, overwhelming environment and was reactive to other dogs. But once he had access to the play yard, his true personality shined.

We quickly discovered that Boq has a special talent: finding tennis balls, proudly carrying them around, and carefully selecting the perfect spot to bury them. He also enjoys a game of fetch, though he prefers to hold on to the ball rather than return it. Watching Boq thrive in this space gave us a chance to showcase his sweet, playful nature to potential adopters.

Boq’s extra playtime helped him find the perfect family, and he is now happy, healthy, and thriving in his new home. We are so grateful to the Petfinder Foundation for making this possible and helping Boq get the second chance he deserved.
