Almost Home Cat Rescue MKE: Operation Grant Report

How did this grant help your organization and the pets in your care?

In the most immediate sense, the grant helped our shelter cover essential supplies such as litter and food as well as medical supplies. In addition, the grant allowed us to pursue projects that we have been hoping to complete for some time.

By covering our routine expenses, the grant allowed us to use the money gathered from our extensive fundraising campaigns to install new floors in the shelter that will make life far more comfortable for the cats as well as our volunteers and visitors.

The expenses of running an animal shelter are extensive and often unexpected. With the support of the Petfinder Foundation, we have helped many cats over the past few months, including bottle babies and cats with medical conditions that may have rendered them ineligible for care at other shelters. We are very grateful for the support you have given us and for your overall commitment to the well-being of animals across the country.

Please provide a story of one or more specific pets this grant helped.

While many cats were helped by the supplies purchased with the generous grant given by the Petfinder Foundation, perhaps none touched the hearts of our shelter volunteers more than Chevron (first photo).

He was less than a year old when he came to us, but he had already experienced more trauma than many cats experience in a lifetime. He was found injured at a gas station by a good Samaritan, who thankfully thought to bring him to us.

Our medical officer, Kristin, took him to the ER, where it was found that he had a complete fracture of the left femur that could not be fixed surgically. After carefully considering his age and future quality of life, it was decided to amputate his leg.

Chevron made a quick recovery and soon joined our shelter population. In spite of everything, he maintained his sweet, happy personality, and could soon be found purring away in the nearest available lap.

In the end, he was adopted by one of our founders, Jodi, but he remains in the memories of everyone who had the pleasure to know him.
